Kotta Cooperative is a group of 243 farmers located in Goma. The cooperative is part of the Kata Meduga Union, a completely new “Limu” union established in 2016. This union brings together 20 cooperatives from the Agaro region – one of the most promising coffee regions in Ethiopia. The most famous cooperatives are Biftu Gudina, Duromina and Nano Chala. As part of our development philosophy, we decided to provide a platform to cooperatives that have not yet achieved much fame. The Kotta Cooperative is one such example.
This coffee is produced in a semi-forestry farming system, through small farms with areas ranging from 1 to 20 hectares. The cherries are delivered to the cooperative’s washing station, where the coffee is ground with a Penagos pulper. The mucilage is removed mechanically after it is fermented for 12 hours. It is dried for 6-7 days on raised drying beds.
